Welcome to Fife Flying Club
Fife Flying Club was formed in 1984 under the original name of Fife Aero Club and works in partnership with Tayside Aviation to promote flying, provide tuition and encourage social activities amongst its members. Based at Fife Airport (EGPJ) near Glenrothes, it is ideally positioned for quick and easy access to some of the most attractive scenery in the UK, much of which is uncontrolled airspace.
Fife Airport itself dates from the early 1960s and originally operated as a grass airfield supporting a number of flying operations including flying training and parachuting. In 1981, the grass runway was replaced by the current 700 metres of tarmac, which today is the only civilian hard runway in Fife.
The club has over 100 active members who come not only from Fife itself but also the Lothians, Tayside, Central Scotland and beyond. Our membership covers a wide range of experience levels from students, (N)PPLs and even a number of commercial pilots, many of whom started their flying as PPL students here at Fife.
The award-winning restaurant, The Tipsy Nipper, is widely regarded within aviation circles as one of the best airfield restaurants in the UK.
The club has a busy calendar of events to cater for the diverse interests of its members. For example:
- Club Evenings - Talks on aspects of aviation skills, safety matters, etc.
- Guest Speakers - These have included the RAF, Fire & Ambulance Services.
- Competitions - Treasure Hunts, Quiz Nights, etc.
- Fly-Outs - Trips to other airfields around the country are always a popular event.
- Barbecues - A chance to be social on the ground (especially when the weather's good!).
The club also organises events in support of local charities and the highlight of the season is perhaps the "Annual Summer Fly-In and Open Day". Usually held in June, this event is always popular with the local community when we open our doors and put on air and ground-based attractions as a fun family day out.
Bonfire Night is another popular event when we put on a bonfire and firework display accompanied by soup and stovies to keep the cold out and invite the local community to the airfield for another fun evening.
There's always something going on around the airfield and we particularly welcome visiting pilots who wish to either drop in for a quick visit or to stay for a few days and enjoy a short holiday in Fife.
